Is the class for beginners?

Although I have students who have been taking the class for several years, it is considered a beginning/intermediate level class. Because the basic poses and instructions are repeated many times, it is possible for people to join at any point. This style of yoga is very adaptable so that anyone can do the poses to their own ability with the help of adjustments and props.

Who will be in the class?

The classes usually have between 5 and 12 people, generally in their 30's, 40's, and 50's, although we have students who are both younger and older. Most of the students are women, but we have several regular male students as well. Many people have joined the classes very recently, but some have been coming for several years.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that enables you to move - leggings, sweat pants, leotards, shorts, etc., and bare feet. The room is a comfortable temperature.

If you have a yoga sticky mat, bring one. I have several that I lend out. Eventually most people like to own their own mat. I sell them for $23, or you can buy them from a yoga supply company.

How often should I practice?

Adding yoga to your life to any degree can have a profound effect on your health and well being. The benefits are greatest when practiced regularly (daily) for even a short amount of time. Classes can help you with your home practice and a teacher can ensure that you are practicing correctly and with alignment. Some people like to take several classes a week and others find that fitting one class into their schedule per week is challenging. There are also audiotapes, videos, and books available.

What style of yoga is this?

This class is Iyengar Yoga, a type of hatha yoga. Most of the styles of yoga practiced in this country are hatha yoga - the physical discipline of yoga. See this page for an in-depth comparison the various styles.
